About Highway Products International

Late in 2014 TJ-Steel negotiated the sale of the stock and assets to HJ Asmuss Ltd an Auckland Steel Merchandising Company, however during the negotiations they declined to take up the TJ-Traffics stock which TJ-Steel sold successfully locally and throughout parts of the world, Australia, Fiji, Ireland, South America, Middle East and Ireland this gave shareholders of TJ-Steel the opportunity to set up Highway Products International Ltd.

Tony Bell, the original owner of TJ Steel, saw an opportunity to develop a standalone Traffic Safety business using suppliers and customers developed over many years to service a growing industry firstly in New Zealand but also in many other parts of the world.

With 5 other shareholders from TJ Steel Tony set up HPI , which has now become one of the leading suppliers of Traffic safety Hardware in Australasia. Unfortunately in 2017 Tony passed away and with another long-time shareholder Barry Sutherland passing away also in March of 2018 this left Phil Burrows running the Hamilton based business on his own.

Roger Sheridan and John Nicolson have both since sold their shares in HPI leaving just Phil running the business with Winson Lam in Malaysia, Winson has manufactured the Guardrail for the New Zealand Market for the last 15yrs and has proved to be an important part of HPI both in developing new products and implementing strategies to improve quality and service.

Moving forward in a constantly changing business environment produces a lot of challenges both in supply and development, but the legacy that Tony has left provides the guidance Phil needs to take HPI into its next phase.
